The purpose of this blog is to provide a resource for those interested in saving historic pipe organ in Baltimore City. Since the early nineteenth century Baltimore has been home to a number of talented organ builders. As the city was a gateway to the west and the southern most northern city, many of the instruments built in Baltimore shops went to western and southern states. However, with its rich religious diversity, many organs stayed in Baltimore. Today an alarming number of these instruments have been destroyed, and the fate of others are in danger. As trends in church music have leaned toward popular music, many pipe organs have sit unused, with no maintenance or insurance.
In recent years we have seen storms and fires consume a number of organs. Still others have been demolished by their owners, who wished to remove them to create space for a re-purposing of the building or out rite demolition. However, given the right support a number of pipe organs have been rescued, restored and moved to new homes. For a fraction of the cost of a new pipe organ, a transplanted and restored pipe organ
can provide its new owners decades worth of use.
This is a new blog. As time goes by entries will be made to provide you the reader with photos and information about available instruments. Our goal is to get up and running as fast as possible as we know that the fate of several organs are in peril.
