Alert
The 1891 Johnson & Son pipe organ at Carter Memorial Church of God in Christ, located at 745 W. Lafayette Ave., is said to be sold to the University of Maryland. There is little doubt that the 1830s building will be demolished. The Johnson organ sits in an alcove behind the pulpit and contains sixteen speaking stops. Though not playing, the instrument is intact and has not suffered from any major tinkering.
The building was built as Fayette Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church in the 1830s and received a new facade and renovation in the 1870s.  The Johnson organ replaces a smaller Johnson organ of 1876.

  1. Is the sale of the Johnson organ to the University of Maryland a done deal?
